Acne

If you have moderate to severe acne, many treatment options are available. Mirage Medical Group practices have helped thousands of patients identify the causes of their acne and attain healthier, clearer, and scar-free skin.

Overview

Acne comes in several different forms. Most common is acne vulgaris, followed by cystic acne and adult acne. While the condition is quite common and bothersome, it is completely treatable using modern cosmetics and technology. While individuals of any age group can develop acne, it is most common in teenagers, young adults and some women in their 30s and 40s. Acne can be caused by hormones, bacteria on the skin, as well as clogged pores from the body’s natural oil production.

It most often affects the face, but can be found on other areas such as the back, chest, and upper arms. Common manifestations of acne include whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, cysts, or any combination of these. Occasionally the acne can be painful if pores become inflamed.

Diagnosis and Treatment

At Mirage Medical Group acne is evaluated based on its type and its severity prior to a treatment regimen being developed for you. There are numerous treatment regimens available. DUSA BLU-U light is especially effective in treating moderate inflammatory acne and mild scarring.

DUSA is an FDA-approved treatment and in some cases insurance covers the treatment. Another commonly used approach is to combine Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) with the BLU-U regimen.

Topical treatments can include specially formulated facial washes, lotions, creams, and topical gels. These approaches are designed to both minimize oil production and kill existing bacteria. Antibiotic pills can be a helpful option as well, although some require close monitoring and lab visits to reduce the possibility of side effects.

Adult acne in women can be effectively treated by birth controls and other hormone regulators.
